How LakeDye Reviews Products

Neil Schmidt, Founder & Editor-in-Chief
Here's how LakeDye.com evaluates dyes, kits, and supplies — and what qualifies me to write about them.

What this site does

LakeDye is an editorial guide for fiber artists who want straight answers about what's inside the packet. I built this site on a decade of reading spec sheets, owner forums, and textile-industry trade press — wedding that archival research to a craftsperson's practical questions. This is a writer's operation, not a testing lab: I read the chemistry and aggregate the crowd's experience so you don't have to.

How we evaluate

  • Dye chemistry fundamentals: type, bond mechanism, and fiber compatibility
  • Consistency of color across dye lots and application methods
  • Value relative to equivalent alternatives at the same price tier
  • Availability of clear instructions and safety documentation

Affiliate disclosure

Some links on LakeDye are affiliate links — if you buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps cover research time, but it never influences what gets recommended or how it's evaluated.
